Course Types & Grades

Home-study courses

Home study courses use a tutorial model centered around intensive one-on-one verbal and written dialogue. Students engage deeply with subject matter through discussions, dialectical journals, writing assignments, projects, and frequent, personalized feedback. This model emphasizes dialectic over lecture, and active learning over passive absorption. Courses are taught to mastery and evaluated with a variety of methods, including problem sets, tests, projects, oral exams, and papers. Courses use a traditional letter grade scale without +/- designations.

Courses taken with academic partners

Each instructor uses their own grading schema. The grade reported on the transcript is the grade awarded by the outside instructor. We also offer College Board AP and Dual Enrollment courses via academic partners based on availability.

Grade Point Average (GPA) calculation

The grade awarded by the instructor is converted to a grade point using the table below. All courses are counted in computing grade point average, with the exception of courses completed prior to high school. Honors, AP, and DE courses receive an additional point for weighted GPA calculations.
